Tournée French Film Festival, March

ASIFA Atlanta is partnering with Georgia State University and the The Rialto Center for the Arts to present this year's festival, featuring Sylvain Chomet's, The Illusionist, animated short films and a stop motion workshop.

Coffee & Cartoons, April

Batdorf & Bronson is hosting another night of animation and gourmet coffee in their roastery on the westside. This time we're throwing it back to 1960.

10th Annual Roll Yer Own - Local Showcase, June

Ten years of showcasing animators based all over Georgia. Ten years of sharing their animation worldwide through ASIFA . Animated shorts selected for RYO are eligible for distribution in the ASIFA Atlanta international exchange program. Ready your submissions!

Each year in October, ASIFA chapters all over the world collect their best locally produced animated short films, exchange them with global partners and screen them for free.

12 n' 12 Animation Challenge, December

In 2011 ASIFA-Atlanta presented 12 n' 12, an animation challenge inspired by Scott McCloud's 24-Hour Comic. This 24-hour challenge is split into 2 days,12 hours each day. Teams of no more than 4 compete to produce the best 12 second animation. Registration opens in October!

A: Do the work. Don’t get caught up in the technology or software, pc or mac,Toon Boom, Flash, etc. It really comes down to hard work. Unless you are in a studio environment, you will be doing it by yourself. So, if you are bored easily, this isn’t for you. Make sure you get some exercise, too.

12 n' 12: Animation Draw Challenge

ASIFA-Atlanta presents "12 n' 12", the premiere animation draw challenge for Atlanta animators. Inspired by Scott McCloud's "24-Hour Comic", this 24-hour challenge has been split up into to separate days (12 hours each day).

Teams of no more than four will come together to create a one-of-a-kind animation for a local organization. The final animations will be compiled and shown during our December screening at the High Museum. Prizes will also be awarded to the winning team.

Food and supplies will be provided. To participate in the challenge, or find out more information, please send an email to allyssalewis@gmail.com with your:

1. Full Name
2. If you will be working alone, with a team, or if you would like to be placed on a team
3. Description of your animation experience
4. *Optional: Any samples of your work

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. How much does it cost to participate?
--- Nothing. There is no cost required of participants.

2. Can I work from home?
--- Yes, but there are some special rules that you must follow. Please let us know if you plan to work from home.

3. What is the challenge going to be?
--- It is a secret. The release of the challenge will be 10am, Nov. 12th. No one will be given any information on the challenge until then.

4. Is it okay if I work with my non-animation friend?
---Yes, as long as one of you has experience with animation. The experienced person in each group will be considered the team leader and main point of contact. If there are multiple experienced animators in a group, then the group may decide on the leader.

5. Can I participate if I have never animated before?
--- Yes. Unfortunately, there will be no time to teach you how to animate during the challenge. If you do not know how to animate, you must join a team where someone does. No first-time animators will be allowed to work by themselves.

Question:
In this economy, what have you found to be the best technique to gain employment in the Atlanta animation industry?

Answer:
No matter what your skill level, learn Photoshop, After Effects, and either Cinema 4D or Maya. When asked, tell people you know those programs, and when offered a job using one of them, take it. You wouldn't believe how many people I recommended apply for a job, people without jobs, who turned it down.

If you are an artist and want to work in animation, learn the basics of those programs, and you can get a job. Put together a demo reel, a one-page resume, and send them out to all the studios in town. Write a brief, professional cover letter, and be specific about what you are interested in doing.

You may be an amazing designer, but not know after effects, but you can learn it easily. A lot of places are willing to train on the job.

Tip:
Never just show up to a studio. Every studio has a website and an e-mail address. If they're too busy to hire someone new, then they're too busy to talk to someone who's just walking in.

Also, be nice to everyone you talk to, assume that any one could be the person who will decide to hire you - no matter their sex, age, or appearance.

Animation Draw: Call for Artists

Animation Draw is like a game of “tag” for artists, encouraging beginners to learn animation by drawing more simply, and challenging professionals to continue where another artist left off. The result is short animated film with a variety of styles compiled by ASIFA-Atlanta.

We're seeking animation instructors to lead the workshops, and creative volunteers to help before and during the workshop. Post workshop, there are opportunities for professional animators, voice talents, musicians and editors.

Animation Draw Workshop for the High Museum’s Teen Team

In partnership with the High Museum's new Teen Team, we're presenting two Animation Draw workshops modeled on exhibits at the Museum. The first is based on the methods of Radcliff Bailey's exhibit, “Memory as Medicine.” This four hour workshop is designed for 15 artists selected from high schools all over Georgia.

An extended four day Teen Team workshop will repeat in October, in correlation with ASIFA's International Animation Day and the High Museum's exhibit of "Modern Masters: Picasso to Warhol."

Students will work together to create photos, stop-motion and drawings. Then, ASIFA-Atlanta will compile their efforts into an animated short film. Films premiere during the High Museum’s Teen Night.

This is a festival created by animators, for animators, and all lovers of animation.

We've thrown the door wide open for submissions. You may submit films made at any time during your life. And you are free to simultaneously show your work online or at other festivals.

All types of animation are encouraged: hand-drawn, computer-generated, stop-motion... We attempt to program shorts blocks focusing on each method separately—both to educate, and to satisfy each methods' enthusiasts.

We strive to pack the weekend with as much animation as possible. But the festival is still bigger than just this. Select films go on to become part of our "Best of the NW Animation Fest" traveling show, which will tour the region during the following year.

Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT): Call for Submissions

The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA is calling for the submission of short puppet theater pieces ten minutes or less for the Xperimental Puppetry Theater program. XPT offers the opportunity for professional and emerging artists in all disciplines to explore and experiment, creating original puppet theater geared to adult audiences.

You can apply as a Project Director with your own show, or as an Individual Member available to participate in the different pieces as performer, musician, builder, etc.

We also accept short puppet films. Proposed films must be under eight minutes, and can be stop-motion, claymation, live manipulation, collage, silhouette, or any other style of puppet film. Accepted films will be placed in the Center’s extensive Puppetry Research Library.

We also accept puppetry themed installation/performance art which can take place anywhere on the Center’s grounds during the production in May. We are pleased to offer funding for new works. Project grants up to $450 may be awarded. In addition, rehearsal space, some technical, design, and manipulation assistance can be provided as available.

The deadline for project proposals is February 1st, 2011. Performance dates are May 19-22, 2011. For application and more info visit our website:

ATLANTA, GA - ASIFA-Atlanta continues its co-presentation of the best in independent animation with ANIMATION ATTACK! at the Festival League's Atlanta Underground Film Festival. This year, ANIMATION ATTACK! will span four nights, with three programs of short subjects from Atlanta and around the world, including a special screening of Bruce Bickford's CAS'L. Most famous for his work for Frank Zappa, Bickford is a prolific animator who uses clay. CAS'L will be screened at Eyedrum on August 28th,11pm, with live music accompaniment by local, zany band OMELET. ANIMATION ATTACK! will also screen this year's independent hit, SITA SINGS THE BLUES, by Nina Paley, at the Five Spot on August 30th, at 10:30pm.

Animated shorts programs one and two will show at Midtown Art Cinema on Wednesday, August 26th at 8:30pm and August 27th at 9:30pm. Program three will show at Eyedrum on Friday, August 28th, at 11pm, along with CAS'L.

The programs of animated shorts include over thirty-five films, selected from submissions to AUFF and hand-picked by ASIFA-Atlanta. Included are films created by local independent animators Em Kempf, Jerry Fuchs, and MT Maloney. New York City is also represented, with films by Signe Baumane, Edmond Hawkins, and the Rauch Brothers. International artists are represented from Australia, Canada, Finland, Great Britain and Germany; a few of the films (BAIT and CODSWALLOP) were picked from being seen at Annecy. Films from ASIFA-Atlanta's monthly collaborative Animation Draw events at WonderRoot will also be shown, as well as an excerpt from "En Transit", a collaborative media work created by Sara Hornbacher, Hartmut Koenitz and Ken Knoespel.

Bruce Bickford's CAS'L is a 47-minute clay animation. Bickford is an underground artist best known for his work for Frank Zappa in the 1970's. ASIFA-Atlanta and AUFF are thrilled to be presenting the work in progress, as the soundtrack will be provided by a live performance from local band Omelet!

In SITA SINGS THE BLUES, the filmmaker, Nina Paley, is an artist who finds parallels in Sita’s life when her husband – in India on a work projec t - decides to break up their marriage and dump her via email. Three hilarious Indonesian shadow puppets with Indian accents – linking the popularity of the Ramayana from India all the way to the Far East - narrate both the ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the epic. In her first feature length film, Paley juxtaposes multiple narrative and visual styles to create a highly entertaining yet moving vision of the Ramayana. Musical numbers choreographed to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw feature a cast of hundreds: flying monkeys, evil monsters, gods, goddesses, warriors, sages, and winged eyeballs. A tale of truth, justice and a woman’s cry for equal treatment. Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as "The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told."

This Sunday, June 28th, at 8pm we have our annual showcase of locally-made commercial animation, Blowin' Smoke at Five Spot! The event is free and is a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse at the animation industry that's right here in Atlanta.

We're proud to be showing work from Turner Studios, including an unaired pilot called "Avery Matthews" by the guys who brought you "Harvey Birdman"! We are also very happy to be showing work from local studio Primal Screen! Also, for the first time, local studio Awesome Incorporated will be showing work at this event- we may have more material from other local studios but some of it is up in the air. We'll also be showing work from local freelancer and animator Joanna Davidovich. Thanks for the submissions, guys!

Animation Draw 3 went great last Saturday; thanks to those who came out and drew with us! We've scheduled another for July 25th at WonderRoot. It's likely we will include all of these collaborative animations on our International Animation Day DVD which we will send around the world.

Thanks so much to everyone who came to Roll Yer Own!! Especially those who were generous enough to donate a buck or two, we truly appreciate it!!

ASIFA-Atlanta "Roll Yer Own" 2009 Awards:

The "Best of Show" award went to "Stubbe Peter" by Kristin Jarvis.

The "Audience Choice" award went to "Cornpopalypse" by Maurice VandenBergh II.

Winners receive a free year's membership to ASIFA-Atlanta.

This was the first year we did awards; here's how they were picked: the night before "Roll Yer Own" we held a pre-screening and debated about which film to give the "Best in Show" award to, and we picked Kristin's. For the "Audience Choice" award, we received 70 votes (thank you voters!); "Cornpopalypse" won with fourteen votes, and "Gypsy Crepes" came in second with nine votes. "As Seen on TV" was third with six votes.

Thanks to all filmmakers for submitting, and thanks to those who helped, particularly John Cason for the beautiful flyer, Karl Sigler for the DVD authoring, Cameron Stuart for everything, Takuro Masuda for working the door, and Bryan Fordney, Fatimah Abdullah, and Joel Rose for being on the award committee.

ASIFA-Atlanta thought you might be interested in seeing character-designer and illustrator Peter de Sève at Portfolio Center on May 7th at 10am. Peter has worked for Disney, Pixar, and Blue Sky, among others.

De Sève has designed posters for Broadway shows, as well as characters for numerous animated feature films, produced by Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar, and Twentieth Century Fox (Blue Sky Studios). His credits include The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, Mulan, A Bug's Life, Tarzan, and the box office hit, Ice Age, for which he created all of the characters. In addition to his extensive work in animated feature film, de Sève has provided designs for television commercials, including a Nike spot, titled "Destination Moon," which won a silver Clio award. In 2002, he received the distinguished Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators.

ASIFA-Atlanta will be having our annual "Roll Yer Own" showcase of local independent animation at the Five Spot on May 31st. We highly encourage you to submit an animated film; please fill out the form on our website:

Films in "Roll Yer Own" will be considered for inclusion on our International Animation Day DVD, which we send all over the world each year in October (Japan, Israel, France, Korea...). This is a great opportunity.

Also, as part of the Atlanta Film Festival, ASIFA-Atlanta is putting on a collaborative animation event- an Animation Draw!

The Animation Draw will take place at The Independent on Saturday, April 18th, 11am to 4pm, just prior to the screening of Bill Plympton's "Idiots & Angels" at 4:45pm at Midtown Art Cinema.

We will have a few light table set up- artists will take turns drawing, picking up where the last artist left off. It'll be free both to attend and participate.

The result will be a collaborative animation!

Danger Woman's Superhero Showdown is happening on April 30th at 8pm at the Vinyl on 1374 West Peachtree Street. It's a benefit concert to raise awareness and completion funds for the film, "Disabled But Able To Rock", a locally-produced documentary by Blake Myers. The show will include The Selmanaires, The Falcon Lords, and appearances by members of Blast Off Burlesque, and a superhero costume contest. Danger Woman's Danger Force Band will also make an appearance. It's rumored that a certain someone may shave their beard at this show, but it is still to be determined. The show will be $10 at the door.

ASIFA-Atlanta Report of Activities

ASIFA-International puts together a magazine that goes to all our members all over the world. Each chapter usually sends a report of what they've been up to for each issue. Many thanks to Ray Kosarin for the editing!

Here's our latest update:

ASIFA-Atlanta continues to be very active, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and board. Recently we've been working more with other organizations, such as Society for Animation Studies, whose conference will be held in July at Savannah College of Art and Design's Atlanta campus as well as at the High Museum of Art. Harvey Deneroff, professor at SCAD-Atlanta and one of the founders of SAS, asked us to present a program of excellent local animation, which we are working on now.

ASIFA-Atlanta is also working with the Center for Puppetry Arts--we helped spread the word about a night of stop-motion films, curated by Alan Louis, which included shorts such as Harvie Krumpet and was very well attended.. ASIFA-Atlanta members received a discount on admission, and ASIFA-Atlanta screening coordinator Karl Sigler compiled the DVD that was shown.

Our most recent event was a special fund-raising screening of the beautiful and increasingly famous film, Sita Sings the Blues. We were absolutely delighted to show this film, for which we booked the larger of two screens available in Atlanta's historic Plaza theater. ASIFA-Atlanta president Brett W. Thompson gave a short introduction, which was followed by the trailer for Monster Road, the documentary on Bruce Bickford scheduled for a subsequent screening at the Center for Puppetry Arts. The Center has arranged for director Brett Ingram to attend and do a Q&A afterward!

Following the trailer, we showed a special video introduction that Nina Paley very generously recorded for us! She explained some background about the film, including its copyright issues, and announced how it has been released under Creative Commons, which means anyone can copy, publish, show, or remix the film. She also gave shout-outs to ASIFA-Atlanta's volunteer projectionist Bryan Fordney, Karl Sigler, and president Brett W. Thompson, as well as the ASIFA-Atlanta Board and door volunteers. Many thanks to Nina Paley for all her help, and to the Plaza for being so accomodating!

Exactly a week after Sita Sings the Blues, "PSST! 3" showed at the Plaza, coordinated by participant and Atlanta local Calvin Florian. "PSST! 3" is a diverse, creative series of collaborative short films made by many participants over the last year, and AISFA-Atlanta promoted this excellent event.

ASIFA-Atlanta's plans for the rest of 2009 include "Roll Yer Own", our annual showcase of local independent animated film; "Blowin' Smoke", the commerical counterpart to "Roll Yer Own"; "Animation Attack!", part of the Atlanta Underground Film Festival; and of course International Animation Day, which we always love. We are also very proud to be participating in the SAS conference.

As usual, we are continuing our recurring events, which include Joe Peery's weekly figure drawing class at Westwood College and the monthly Animators' Workshop at Manuel's Tavern, run by Karl Sigler.

ASIFA-Atlanta is proud to announce that we've just booked the Plaza for March 11th, at 7:30pm, to show the award-winning animated feature, "Sita Sings the Blues"!

Then, on March 28th at 8pm, the Center for Puppetry Arts will be showing "Monster Road", the fascinating documentary about famous animator Bruce Bickford! The director, Brett Ingram, will do a Q&A afterwards. Don't miss it!

Tomorrow (Friday), "Coraline" opens in theaters nationwide! Based on a story by Neil Gaiman and directed by Henry Selick ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), it's sure to be good.

Award-winning "Waltz with Bashir" is currently playing at Midtown Art Cinema! It's an animated documentary (very unique!) about director Ari Folman's experience as an Israeli soldier; I'm really excited that it's playing in Atlanta because I've been dying to see it for a while. It should be showing at least until Febuary 12th.

Also at Midtown Art Cinema, on Febuary 20th, the "Oscar-nomated Animated Shorts" will be shown! ASIFA-Atlanta 2008 Report of Activities

ASIFA-Atlanta had a fantastic 2008, featuring animators from our local chapter and throughout the world, including those who participated in ASIFA's International Animation Day.

We started the year in February with our first-ever screening on film (16mm), "To Hell With Hitler", a selection of WWII-era American propaganda cartoons, curated by C. Martin Croker. The screening took place at Atlanta's historical Plaza cinema.

In April, ASIFA-Atlanta helped to promote Atlanta Film Festival's "Animation Extravaganza" night, and ASIFA-Atlanta President Brett W. Thompson did an introduction and Q&A.

In May, we held our annual "Roll Yer Own" event, which showcases locally-produced independent animation. This year featured a wide range of techniques--for instance Moviekiss: The Lite Brite Video, animated with a Lite Brite toy; Knight vs Knight, animated on a TI-86 graphing calculator; and Bee Bog, animated traditionally and composited with AfterEffects. The event was very well attended and successful; the filmmakers were invited on stage afterwards for a Q&A.

In July, for our annual event "Blowin' Smoke," Atlanta animation studios showcased their best commercial work and generously took time to talk to eager animators seeking advice and employment. Participating studios included Primal Screen, Radical Axis, Turner Studios, and 70/30.

"Animation Attack!", part of the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, was perhaps our biggest event and occurred in August. We showed an animated feature, John's Arm: Armageddon, and two blocks of world-class animated shorts at Atlanta's historic Plaza Theatre. Films included Aaron Augenblick's Golden Age, Mathieu Labaye's Orgesticulanismus, Max Margulies and Naoko Masuda's God of Tears, and Tim Rauch's film Germans in the Woods.

ASIFA-Atlanta was very proud to celebrate International Animation Day on October 28th at the High Museum of Art's Hill Auditorium. It is one of our favorite events and makes us grateful to be a part of the worldwide animation community- we were happy to be able to exchange films with ten countries. About 400 people came to the two showings, and the positive feedback we received from the audience was overwhelming and wonderful. Thanks to Juliette Crochu for coordinating IAD this year.

In November, ASIFA-Atlanta brought Don Hertzfeldt to Atlanta as part of his tour for his latest film, I am so proud of you. Our screening coordinator Karl Sigler introduced the program and did a great Q&A with Don.

Finally, to finish 2008, in December ASIFA-Atlanta put together an art show, the theme of which was the Golden Age of Comics/Cartoons. Thirty-seven artists created sixty-five pieces of art which were on display in the Eyedrum's gallery space for over a month. The opening night for the art show was very well attended (Eyedrum's parking lot filled up) and featured music from local bands Omelet, The Falcon Lords, The Back Pockets, and Floating Coats.

For 2009, ASIFA-Atlanta is proud to have partnered with Atlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts to help their new film series, curated by Alan Louis. The series will include an evening of stop motion films as well as a screening of "Monster Road", the documentary about Bruce Bickford.

ASIFA-Atlanta will continue to have exciting events in 2009, as well as continue our recurring events, which include a weekly figure drawing class (run by Joe Peery) and the monthly Animators' Workshop, run by our screening coordinator Karl Sigler.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped make our first annual art show / music show / party a big success- volunteers, artists, musicians, and those who came out to support us!

We filled up Eyedrum's parking lot, had awesome art and music, and raised some money for ASIFA-Atlanta so we can keep doing exciting things in 2009!

Just a couple days later, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (http://www.ajff.org/) will be showing Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist, at Lefont Sandy Springs, on Monday, Jan 19, 2009, 4:40pm. It's possible a representative from ASIFA-Atlanta will introduce the film and do a Q&A. This will be the Atlanta premiere of the film, which is a documentary on Will Eisner. Speaking of premieres, Delgo was released to theatres on December 12th! This indepenent animated feature was created here in Atlanta by Fathom Studios. It screened at Annecy as well as the Red Stick Animation Festival in Baton Rogue. It also won Best Animated Feature at the Anima Mundi Film Festival in Brazil. I'd love to see more independent animated features produced with local talent!

ATLANTA, GA - ASIFA-Atlanta, in association with Eyedrum, is proud to present its first annual ASIFA-Atlanta Art Show. In keeping with the spirit of ASIFA, the collection of work by its members is inspired by the Golden Age of Comics and Cartoons. There promises to be an exceptional display of character driven and humorous pieces that is indicative of the work being produced by Atlanta's animation community. The collection will feature contributions from over three dozen artists. (A partial list of artists is attached below.) The majority of pieces displayed will also be available for sale.

The show will be on display at Eyedrum Gallery with the following schedule:

Opening, Saturday, December 6th, 8pm - 11pm; ($7 admission; Free for Eyedrum Members, ASIFA Members and Participating Artists)

Regular gallery hours are:
Fridays (3:00pm - 8:00pm)
Saturdays and Sundays (1:00pm - 6:00pm), through December 28th.

Additionally, the Opening Night of the Gallery Show will feature food, drinks and live music performances by Omelet, The Back Pockets, Floating Coats, and The Falcon Lords. (Music contacts and further info is attached below.)

BURBANK, Calif. (September 10, 2008) The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announces its Call for Entries for consideration for this year's 36th Annual Annie Awards. Current Categories & Rules as well as all entry forms can be found online at www.annieawards.org.

The Annie Awards honor overall excellence as well as individual achievement in a total of 24 categories ranging from production design, character animation and effects animation to storyboarding, writing, music and voice acting. Entries submitted for consideration will be from productions that originally aired, were exhibited in an animation festival or commercially released between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008.

This year's ceremony will be held on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA. The black-tie ceremony will feature a lively mix of animation luminaries, celebrity presenters and comedic talent to celebrate this year's best of the best.

The Annie Awards have long recognized pioneers at the forefront of animation through nominations, juried awards and certificates of merit. In 1972, legendary voice actor June Foray organized the very first Annie Awards. Today, supported by major animation studios and production companies, the Annie Awards have grown into a much-heralded industry event and are considered an important industry benchmark and a predictor of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

ASIFA-Hollywood is the largest of an international network of chapters and supports a range of animation initiatives through its membership . Current projects include an animation archive, library and museum, classes and screenings, and animated film preservation efforts.

ASIFA is the French acronym for L'Association Internationale du Film D' Animation, an organization founded in 1957 in France by a group of professional animators and chartered by UNESCO in 1960 to encourage the art of animation and further international understanding and goodwill through the animation medium. 0Today, there are ASIFA chapters in nearly 30 countries worldwide.

Calling All Entries! Red Stick International Animation Festival Seeks Films for 2009 Competition

Baton Rouge – Red Stick International Animation Festival, the largest event of its kind in the United States, is now accepting entries for its fifth annual 2009 "Best of the Fest" competition.

Red Stick highlights the intersections among art, technology and computational science. Each year, the festival draws renowned animators, video game developers and other digital media industry professionals to Baton Rouge to host lectures, workshops and other events for aspiring artists, programmers and entrepreneurs.

The festival is sponsored by LSU in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President's Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Louisiana Economic Development and Baton Rouge Area Digital Industries Consortium.

More than 200 people from nearly 30 countries entered films for the 2008 competition, and more than 4,000 people attended the festival events and film screenings.

For the 2009 festival, which will take place April 22-25 in downtown Baton Rouge's Arts District, participants can submit work in eight categories:

· Animated Short Film (student and professional)

· Music Video

· Scientific Visualization

· Animation for Commercials

· Animation for Games

· Animation for Young Audiences

· Experimental Animation/Visual Music (student and professional)

· Storyboard Competition

There is no entry fee for the competition, and participants can submit work in more than one category. Red Stick will accept entries through Dec. 1, 2008.

Bad lip-synching! Toy spaceships on strings! Bras made out of seashells! Witness these and many other pilfered moments of high camp in Mike Davis' feature film Sex Galaxy at the ATLANTA UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL, beginning Wed., AUG., 20. Davis assembled Sex Galaxy from more than 40 public-domain film clips and calls his film a "100 percent recycled movie." Far from alone, Galaxy joins 18 other alternative features and dozens of genre-busting shorts for the five-day festival taking place in venues throughout Atlanta. Other feature films include Tokyo Cowboys, about foreign desperados in Japan, and What Are We Doing Here?, a bracing look at how aid to Africa has backfired. ‘Underground’ cinema series ranges from surreal to spooky

FROM THE SERIOUS to the surreal, sci-fi to sideshow, the Atlanta Underground Film Festival offers short films the likes of which you probably won’t see in a typical multiplex. Celebrating its fifth year, the festival takes place at five venues over the course of five days and includes experimental films by locals as well as those from as far away as Australia, Spain, New Zealand and Germany.

Here are a few things worth grabbing a tub of popcorn for:

Animation Attack! The local chapter of the Association International du Film d’Animation returns to AUFF for the second year with the premiere of “John’s Arm: Armageddon,” from Atlanta’s Mike the Pod studio. The feature-length film is about a man whose arm gains super powers after being stuck in a vending machine filled with radioactive soft drinks. It screens 11:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Lenny’s. Animation Attack! will continue with two programs of short films about zombies, dinosaurs, space travel, war, suicide and other varied topics at the Plaza Theatre at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and 8:30 p.m. Aug. 23.

Comedy Shorts: To most filmgoers, the term comedy evokes thoughts of Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller in situations of humorous absurdity. But the independent spirit of this festival allows for other interpretations during the Aug. 23 comedy program at the Plaza. “Attackazoids!” turns an alien invasion into something laughable while “Honey, I’m Home” sheds a comedic light on infidelity. “The Outhouse” offers toilet humor in the most literal sense and “Panels from the Walls of Hell” is about a film festival projectionist forced to cope with a gruesome setback. 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Plaza Theatre.

DocuFest: This documentary program returns for its third year at AUFF. Taking place each night at Young Blood and the Highland Inn Ballroom, it includes longer films such as “Wiener Takes All: A Dogumentary” (10 p.m. Aug. 21 at Young Blood), about professional dachshund racing, and a feature about the emerging geek rap scene called “Nerdcore for Life” (8:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Young Blood). “Opposite Land” (7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Highland Inn Ballroom) poses a more serious look at the effects of the United States’ use of Latin American resources, while “More Shoes” (8:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Highland Inn Ballroom) shows one man’s journey across Europe on foot. A program of documentary shorts takes place at the Plaza 5 p.m. Aug. 22.

Freak Show Shorts: A hodge-podge of avant-garde shorts, this Aug. 22 night program pushes the envelope a little more with overtly sexual themes and general weirdness. “Carnival Picaresque” is a drunken acid trip of a journey of delusional degenerates, and “Dog Eat Dog” is about those who derive pleasure from mimicking canine traits. “Vampyros Lesbos” is a Canadian film about a lover scorned by his wife’s lesbian escapades and the drastic actions he takes as a result. 11 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Plaza.

FILM WITH ATLANTA TIES WINS BIG

"Delgo," an animated fantasy movie with the voices of Jennifer Love Hewitt, the late Anne Bancroft, Val Kilmer, Eric Idle, Lou Gossett Jr., Kelly Ripa, Burt Reynolds and Freddie Prinze Jr., has won the Best Animated Feature Award at the Anima Mundi Film Festival in Brazil. And why is that in Buzz? Because the movie was made by Fathom Studios right here in Atlanta. No word yet on a release date; that's coming, say the Fathom folks.

Local animation draws attention

ATLANTA HAS BEEN rather animated as of late. Last month the Plaza Theatre hosted "Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation" while nearby Midtown Art Cinema wraps a one-week engagement of Mike Judge's "The Animation Show 4" this week. Dethklok, the animated metal band from Adult Swim's "Metalocalypse," headlined a sold-out show at the Tabernacle last week while Pixar's latest robotic release, "Wall-E," has been a box-office success across the country.

But when it comes to cartoons being produced locally, one need look no further than the Atlanta chapter of the Association International du Film d'Animation, which held "Roll Yer Own," a festival of animated shorts produced locally, on Memorial Day that was popular enough for a rescreening last month. This week ASIFA-Atlanta hosts yet another free screening with "Blowin' Smoke," which features work by local animators and studios that produce commercial animation.

Just because these artists make cartoons for a living doesn't mean the results will be any less entertaining than the indie films from "Roll Yer Own."

Highlights from "Blowin' Smoke" include "Busted," a kid-friendly tale by "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" co-creator Matt Maiellaro about two alien children who go on an adventurous UFO ride, and two pieces by Joanna Davidovich, who has done animation work for clients such as MTV, BBC, PBS and Cocoa Puffs.
