Animation for mature eyes only

By Jonathan Williams
For the Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/19/2008

IT USED TO be that animation referred to family-friendly fare such as Disney films and Saturday morning cartoons. These days, though, anyone who has ever laughed at the intelligently crude humor of shows like "The Simpsons," "South Park" or "Family Guy" knows that animation can often be intended for mature (and immature) audiences and even deemed inappropriate for younger viewers.

Falling in the latter camp of animation, two festivals take place in Atlanta this week championing a surreal style of cartoonish fun. First up is Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Spike & Mike's predates any of the previously mentioned shows and likely paved the way for the popularization of the art form. The weeklong festival showcases underground shorts from around the world such as the French-produced "Du Pain," about anthropomorphic bread slices that plan their escape from a toasty demise, and a couple of gruesomely cuddly "Happy Tree Friends" features about woodland creatures whose innocently pastel adventures end up going horribly wrong. "Save Virgil," featuring the voice of Adam Carolla in the title role, is about the cartoon offspring of a biker and a porn star living in a live-action world.

Focusing on local talent, the Roll Yer Own indie animation festival recently held its fifth annual screening on Memorial Day. Featuring stop motion, Flash, traditional, 3-D and other animation formats, this one-night event allows Atlanta's own filmmakers and animators to showcase their projects yet again with a second showing this week. While they may not feature celebrity endorsements or previous critical acclaim, these shorts might just give you a glimpse at some rising local talent scribbling their way to bigger things.

> THE 411: Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation: $8. 7:45 and 9:45 p.m. June 20-26. The Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave., Poncey-Highland. 404-873-1939, www.spikeandmike.com, www.plazaatlanta.com.

International Animation Day Press Release

French Animated Film Association

About the International Animation Day

28th of October 2008

In 2002, ASIFA, the International Animated Film Association, launched a global event to celebrate the art of animation. October 28th was proclaimed as International Animation Day, commemorating the first public performance of Emile Reynaud's Theatre Optique at the Grevin Museum in Paris, in 1892.

Each year, ASIFA groups around the world celebrate International Animation Day. In 2007, about 40 different countries in all the continents celebrated this day.

We invite you to join us by screening animated films, organizing workshops, exhibiting artwork and stills, providing technical demonstrations, and helping to promote the art of animation.

Some of us have taken this opportunity to spread this event over several days involving numerous partners. Such a celebration is an outstanding opportunity of putting the animated film in the limelight, and making this art more accessible to the public.

Richard Williams' new website address

Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation Fest at the Plaza Theatre

JOIN SPIKE AND MIKE'S IN ITS 25TH YEAR AS THE KINGS OF TASTELESS TOONS!

Before there was an OscarTM for "Best Animated Film", before there were hundred million dollar grosses for animated movies, before there were icons like Beavis and Butt-Head, Homer and Bart, or Shrek and Donkey, before all that... practically before there was life on the planet, there was Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation. For 25 years they have been the leading presenters of cutting-edge animation and cartoons, from quirky hand drawn gems to elaborate computer generated productions. Spike and Mike's is the longest running festival of its kind, and has played a major role in helping the animation medium become one of today's most popular facets of mass entertainment.

The features range from the simple pencil drawings of Chiens & Chats to the incredibly slick looking Jack & Jill. The content this time around is actually a little tamer than in years past, but On-Rop, in which an animated porn movie is watched and explained in reverse, is an exception to that rule.

Longtime watchers of Spike and Mike will enjoy the inclusion of past favorites, including the brilliant, Oscar-nominated Rejected by Don Hertzfeldt and a couple of No Neck Joe shorts produced by Dallas' DNA Studios.

Some of the more high-profile selections include:

Save Virgil: Adam Carolla voices Virgil, the cartoon offspring of a biker and porn star Ginger Lynn in this half animated, half live-action feature. Mr. Carolla's sarcastic delivery perfectly captures Virgil's frustration over his life as the only cartoon boy in an all-human world, and his rapping with Young MC and battle during a cameo from one of pop culture's favorite whipping boys keep things quirky.

Happy Tree Friends: The cuddly forest animals who always find their way into increasingly bloodier accidents are back in two shorts: Eyes Cold Lemonade and Ski Ya, Wouldn't Want to Be Ya. Lemonade is the better of the two, though neither is quite as gruesome as past episodes. Still, cuter creatures have never found themselves in more unfortunate situations.

Roybertitos: Fans of Dr. Tran will rejoice that the 5-year-old who is mistaken for a secret agent is back. This time he's trying to figure out how he ended up in a commercial for a fast food Mexican restaurant. Director Breehn Burns' absurd humor returns in all its glory. It's the last film of the show, and it's definitely worth sticking around for.

Friday June 20th – Thursday June 26th at The Plaza Theatre. 1049 Ponce De Leon Ave. Atlanta, GA 30306. Tickets $8

"Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation gives audiences the only opportunity to view the wonderful art form of the animated short film. [It] also gives young animators and filmmakers a chance they normally never get in the film industry." -John Lasseter, Pixar

Fwd: FW: Ticks! At The Five Spot!

Hi, there everyone!
An awesome event is coming up soon check it out! Thank you Justin for forwarding me the info!

Alena Spragg

DOORS OPEN AT 1PM!!!!!

FIRST BAND ON AT 3PM!!!!

'TICKS' is a feature-length stop-motion/C. G. I. animated film being created by yours truly through my production company, Tephramedia, in association with I. M. A. G. E. Film & Video of Atlanta, and is expected to be completed by late 2010. The film has been in production since January 1, 2008 and is involved in an on-going process of fundraising and promotion through the sale of media and art objects through this site, private donations, and through fundraising/networking events just like this, made possible by the generous assistance and participation from arts and entertainment communities within Atlanta, GA and from all over the globe.
The first of such events will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at The Five Spot in Atlanta, GA (Little Five Points), where for one evening (from 1PM to last call at 2AM), under one roof, we will have a comprehensive arts and entertainment showcase and networking party entirely open to the public in exchange for a $5 admission fee (and/or any additional donation that our attendees wouldn't mind parting with) that will go toward the funding of 'TICKS'.
Artists and representatives from the music, film, television, animation, performance, graphic and photographic communities will be present and are encouraged to take advantage of this gathering to get to know one another and thread together the many multi-disciplined and talented people present within our city and also to tap into one another's local audience and fan base.
I have been so fortunate over the past five years to have worked so closely within the music, film, animation, and other arts communities here in Atlanta that I want all of my friends to meet and work with all of your friends, while at the same time helping to make Atlanta's first non-profit, locally produced and financed feature-length animated film.
